What to do when someone dies at home

A series of helpful videos to guide you through some of the decisions you make, learn more about us and our role and the options you have in the funerals we arrange with you.

"If someone dies at home, it can feel overwhelming. Many families don't know what happens next, so we'll just explain the process and hopefully put your mind at ease. If the death was expected and the person was under the care of their GP or specialist team, the first step is usually to contact the GP surgery or the healthcare professional looking after them. It might be a nurse from MacMillan, Marie Curie, the District Nurse Team or an out of hours area doctor. They'll arrange for the death to be verified and explain what happens next. Once that's been done, you can contact your chosen funeral director. There's no rush. Take a little time with your family if you need to. At J Punton & Son, we're available 24 hours a day. Once you call us, we'll arrange a suitable time to come to your home. Our aim is to arrive within an hour whenever possible, although it can occasionally take a little longer if we're attending to another family, or on a funeral – but as soon as we receive your call you will be our top priority.. Everything is done quietly, professionally and with complete dignity. Many families worry they have to make lots of decisions immediately. You don't. Our first visit is simply to care for your loved one. The funeral arrangements can be discussed later, when you've had a chance to gather your thoughts. We'll guide you through registering the death, the paperwork and every stage of arranging the funeral. We’ll leave you with a service book that explains all the things to consider and what happens from this point onwards, You don't have to remember everything today—we'll explain everything as we go."
